New Index is added to the Hamburg Passenger List:

The Family History Library Catalog at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City now shows a new collection, which essentially replaces, and adds to, the incomplete '15-year Index' of the Hamburg Passenger List. It is known as the 'Kluber Karteien'. The data on the microfilmed cards actually dates back to 1850 and includes names from both the Direct and Indirect Lists up to 1871 (48 rolls of microfilm), which is now complete; whereas the in completed 15-year Index (10 rolls of microfilm) was created only from the Direct List. This represents a substantial increase in indexed names. The network version of the catalog is only available at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, which was just recently updated. This new information was cataloged in April of this year, so it missed the spring edition of the 1997 CD-ROM, which was run earlier in the year. CD-ROM versions after the spring run should include the new information. Patrons at Family History Centers should be able to order films, since this information is currently available to patrons in the Family History Library and is on all on-line computers at the Family History Department.

This new index, for the most part, should eliminate the need to check the Indirect and Direct Indexes to the Hamburg Passenger List from 1850 to 1871. The microfilmed cards includes family members and the year of emigration and page number on the actual list. The head of the family is in strict alphabetical order. After viewing the index you can then go to the passenger list. Perhaps you will find others from the same village traveling together.
